Jigs and Fixtures & Cutting Tools
1. Introduction:
In the field of mechanical manufacturing, the use of jigs and fixtures and cutting tools is indispensable for creating machine parts with high precision and efficiency. These are two important groups of tools that support each other during the machining process.
Jigs and fixtures are devices designed to accurately and securely locate and clamp the workpiece (part being machined) during the machining process. They ensure that the workpiece is held in the correct position relative to the cutting tool and the machine tool, thereby producing products with the required dimensions and shapes.
Cutting tools are instruments that directly interact with the workpiece to remove material, forming the desired shape of the part. They come in various shapes, sizes, and are made from different materials depending on the workpiece material and the machining method.
Although they have different functions, jigs and fixtures and cutting tools both play an essential role in improving productivity, accuracy, and reducing production costs.
2. Jigs and Fixtures:
- Definition: A jig or fixture is an auxiliary device used to locate, clamp, and support the workpiece during mechanical machining. Some jigs also have the function of guiding the cutting tool.
- Classification: Jigs and fixtures can be classified according to various criteria, including:
By application:
Milling fixtures
Turning fixtures
Drilling and boring jigs
Grinding fixtures
Assembly fixtures
...
By level of specialization:
Universal fixtures: Adjustable to hold various types of workpieces.
Dedicated fixtures: Designed specifically for one type of workpiece or a particular operation.
Adjustable fixtures: Have adjustable parts to accommodate different workpiece dimensions within a certain range.
By clamping force source:
Manually clamped fixtures
Pneumatically clamped fixtures
Hydraulically clamped fixtures
Electromagnetically clamped fixtures
...
- Roles and Advantages:
Accurate workpiece positioning: Ensures the workpiece is placed in the correct machining position, increasing product accuracy.
Secure workpiece clamping: Holds the workpiece stably during machining, withstanding cutting forces and vibrations.
Increased productivity: Reduces workpiece setup and removal time, allowing for multiple operations to be performed simultaneously or continuously.
Reduced errors: Limits operator-induced errors during workpiece positioning and clamping.
Ensured safety: Holds the workpiece firmly, reducing the risk of workplace accidents.
Cutting tool guidance (in some jigs): Helps the cutting tool move along a precise path, especially in drilling and boring operations.
3. Cutting Tools:
- Definition: Cutting tools are instruments that directly cut the workpiece material to create the desired shape and dimensions of the machine part.
- Classification: Cutting tools are very diverse and can be classified in many ways:
By machining method:
Turning tools
Milling cutters
Drill bits
Boring bars
Reamers
Grinding wheels
...
By manufacturing material:
High-Speed Steel (HSS)
Carbide
Ceramics
Diamond
Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN)
...
By construction:
Solid tools
Brazed tools
Indexable tools
- Roles and Advantages:
Product shaping: Removes excess material to achieve the required shape and dimensions.
Ensured surface quality: Creates a machined surface with the required roughness and accuracy according to technical specifications.
Machining diverse materials: Different types of cutting tools are suitable for various workpiece materials from soft to hard.
Improved machining efficiency: Selecting appropriate cutting tools helps increase cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut, thereby increasing productivity.
High durability and lifespan (with good manufacturing materials): Reduces the frequency of tool replacement, saving costs.
Jigs and fixtures and cutting tools are two inseparable components in modern mechanical manufacturing. A clear understanding of their functions, classifications, and roles is crucial for mechanical engineers and workers, helping them and use them most effectively, contributing to improved quality and production efficiency.
